Presentation Title: Geomembranes - applications and regulations; a global sampling

  1. Boyd J. Ramsey, Geosynthetics Expert, Consultant
  2. Principal, Boyd Ramsey Consulting LLC

Boyd Ramsey has been a leader within the geosynthetic, environmental containment and waste disposal industries for nearly 20 years. He has a long history as an employee of GSE Environmental LLC . He has been involved with the design and selection of containment systems at several of the world largest cities including New York City at the Fresh Kills facility, in Hong Kong, at the NENT facility and other regional landfills and hundreds of other municipal disposal sites in the United States and around the world. Additionally, he has been involved in hazardous waste disposal at sites in the USA such as the Savannah River Superfund site with the US Department of Energy and disposal facilities at the Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and other locations.
He is an elected member of the Council of the International Geosynthetics Society, the co-chair of the IGS Technical Committee on Barriers and leads this global organization in the use of geosynthetic barrier materials. He served for over a decade on the Board of Directors of the Geosynthetic Institute and has advised Dr. Robert Koerner (author of “Designing with Geosynthetics”) and the current Institute Director, Dr. George Koerner on the creation of materials specifications, design guidance and methods of engineering practice that set the standard for geosynthetic materials around the globe. He is also the past chairman of the Geosynthetic Materials Association the leading industry organization lobbying for the advancing the use of geosynthetics within the USA and global markets.

Presentation Title: Comparing the performances of landfill liner systems in terms of contaminant release and groundwater impact

  1. Mario Manassero, PhD, Professor
  2. Professor, Politecnico di Torino, Italy

Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino.
Past Chairman of Technical Committee (TC 215) "Environmental Geotechnics" of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
Appointed as the second Kerry Rowe Lecturer by ISSMGE TC 215.
Research activities about soil improvement methods, landfill and polluted subsoil containment systems, mechanical behavior of municipal and industrial wastes, chemical-physical interaction between pore fluids and solid skeleton, multiphase coupled flows and associated transport phenomena.
Geotechnical consultant of MOSE project for Venice lagoon protection and of Victoria State Environmental Protection Agency (Melbourne). Member of geotechnical design team for Messina Strait suspension bridge.

Presentation Title: Geosynthetics for nuclide contamination – Research developments and innovative applications

  1. Takesshi Katsumi, PhD, Professor
  2. Professor, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, Japan

Dr Takeshi Katsumi graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering, Kyoto University, has been working as a university faculty member since 1991, and in 2009, he promoted to a full professor at the Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES). He has been serving as Vice Dean of GSGES since April 2016.
He has research interests in variety of topics of environmental geotechnics, including waste landfills, remediation of contaminated sites, and reuse of by-products in geotechnical applications. He has published more than 100 journal papers, and received several awards including “JSPS PRIZE” by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 2012.
(JSPS PRIZE is annually awarded to approximately 25 Japanese researchers under 45 years of age from all fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, as introduced at www.jsps.go.jp/english/e-jsps-prize/.) Recently, he has been actively involved in the geo-environmental issues related to recovery works from 2011 East Japan earthquake and tsunami.

Presentation Title: Problems and Solutions for GCLs used in Waste Containment Facilities

Dr. Hakkı O. Ozhan received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (2000) and his M.Sc. (2004) and Ph.D. (2011) degrees from Bogazici University in geotechnical engineering. He worked as a researcher at Brandenburg Technical University, Geotechnical Engineering Department in Germany between 2002 and 2003.
He has been working as Assistant Professor at Civil Engineering Department of Istanbul Kemerburgaz University. He was the Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department between 2014 and 2016. His research interests in geotechnical engineering are in the areas of geosynthetics, geosynthetic clay liners, polymer-treated GCLs, landfills, environmental geotechnics and soil improvement techniques. He is a member of International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), and the International Standards Organization (ISO) Technical committee on geosynthetics ISO/TC221 related to barrier properties.
He has won the “Selected Paper Student Award” at EuroGeo5 in 2012. He is currently the Project Coordinator of the project: “Effects of Waste Water Temperature on the Hydraulic Performance of Polymer Treated and Untreated Geosynthetic Clay Liners” granted by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK).
He was also a member of the organizing committee of the 2016 European Regional Conference of IGS, EuroGeo6.

Ismail Coksayar graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1996 from Middle East Technical University, Turkey. He is the founding managing director of GEOMAS since 2008.
During his career he worked for developing different kinds of clay liners as well as developing new production lines for GCL. GEOMAS is not only producing bentonite clay liners, but also organo clay liners and reactive clay liners. As an innovative producer, GEOMAS has a big R&D team working for developing the chemical and physical properties of GCLs and gets involved with research projects also partially supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK).
Today in-house developed polymer enhanced GCLs are used against very low pH leaches or sea water.
